Planning your time in Cancún & Isla Mujeres

Between roughly May and September, whale sharks gather in the open water north-east of Isla Mujeres to feed. Boats leave from the marinas near Cancún, and the day is long: an offshore crossing, guided snorkel entries in pairs, then a stop at the island. Sightings are reliable in peak season but never guaranteed — these are wild animals following food, not a scheduled attraction.

Isla Mujeres works as a day in its own right outside whale shark season. The island is small enough to cross in an afternoon, the water on the western side is calm and shallow, and the reef sits close to shore.
