Discover Scuba Diving: A Beginner’s First Dive in Playa del Carmen

Never breathed underwater before? Discover Scuba Diving lets you try diving with an instructor — no certification needed. Here’s exactly how a first dive in Playa del Carmen works.

You don’t need a licence to breathe underwater for the first time. Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) is a guided introductory program that takes complete beginners on a real dive with a professional instructor — and the Riviera Maya, with its warm, calm, clear water, is one of the best places on the planet to try it.

What is Discover Scuba Diving?

It’s a try-dive, not a course. After a short briefing on the key skills and safety rules, your instructor leads you on a shallow dive — usually to around 6–12 metres — staying with you the whole time. No exam, no prior experience, no commitment.

Who can do it?

  • Anyone aged 10 and over in good general health.
  • You should be comfortable in water, though you don’t need to be a strong swimmer.
  • Some medical conditions require a doctor’s sign-off — we send a short health questionnaire in advance.

How a first dive works, step by step

1. Briefing

Your instructor explains how to breathe through the regulator, equalise your ears, and clear your mask — the three skills that make diving easy.

2. Confined practice

You practise those skills in shallow, standing-depth water until they feel natural.

3. The dive

Then you descend slowly along the reef, holding your instructor’s guidance, and meet turtles, rays and tropical fish in their world.

Will I be able to equalise / breathe okay?

Almost everyone can. Breathing underwater feels strange for about ninety seconds and then completely normal. If your ears won’t equalise, your instructor simply slows the descent. There is no pressure to push past your comfort zone.

What’s next after your first dive?

If you love it — and most people do — your DSD can often count toward a full Open Water certification. From there the cenotes and certified ocean dives open up.
