Two of the Mexican Caribbean’s best dive bases sit barely an hour apart — yet they offer very different diving. Here’s how Cozumel and Playa del Carmen compare so you can plan the right trip.
Cozumel: world-class drift diving
Cozumel’s reefs are part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and are famous for drift diving: you glide effortlessly along sheer coral walls — Palancar, Santa Rosa, Columbia — while the current does the work. Visibility regularly tops 30 metres, and the marine life (turtles, eagle rays, splendid toadfish) is exceptional. It’s a short ferry from Playa del Carmen.
Playa del Carmen: reefs, bull sharks and cenotes
Playa is the most convenient base on the mainland. Its own reefs offer relaxed dives and, in winter, the chance to see bull sharks. Crucially, Playa is the gateway to the cenotes — the freshwater caverns you can’t dive anywhere else in the world.
Which should you choose?
- Choose Cozumel if drift diving along big walls with high visibility is your priority.
- Choose Playa del Carmen if you want variety — reef, sharks and cenotes — plus easy access to tours and transfers.
- Best of all: base in Playa and take a day trip to Cozumel. You really can do both.
Conditions and seasons
Diving is good year-round. Water sits around 26–29°C; a 3mm wetsuit is plenty on the reef (bring 5mm for cenotes). Visibility is best in the drier months from November to May. Hurricane season peaks September–October, when a few days may be blown out.
