Akumal Bay is the reason most people come down here. The bay is shallow, protected and grazed year-round by green turtles, which makes it one of the few places on this coast where snorkelling with marine life needs no boat and no experience. Access is regulated to protect the seagrass and the animals, so guided entry with a licensed operator is the norm rather than an upsell.

Tulum itself is the gateway to the inland cenote systems and to a stretch of coast where the jungle runs almost to the water. If you are based here, the trade-off is distance: Cancún airport and the whale shark departures are further north, so factor travel time into any full-day plan.
