Swimming alongside a whale shark — a gentle, spotted giant the length of a bus — is one of the most humbling things you can do in the ocean. And the waters off the Mexican Caribbean host one of the largest seasonal gatherings on Earth.
When is whale shark season in Mexico?
The season runs roughly from mid-May to mid-September, peaking in June, July and August. During these months hundreds of whale sharks arrive to feast on plankton and tuna spawn in the nutrient-rich water north of Isla Mujeres and Cancún.
Where do you go?
Tours depart by boat from Cancún, Isla Mujeres or Playa del Carmen and head offshore to the feeding aggregation. Crossings can take 1–2 hours, so the open sea matters — see our note on seasickness below.
What to expect on the day
- You snorkel, you don’t scuba dive — whale sharks feed at the surface.
- Mexican regulations allow only two swimmers plus a guide in the water at a time, taking turns from the boat.
- You must wear a life jacket or wetsuit for buoyancy, and keep a respectful distance — no touching, no sunscreen that harms the animals.
How to swim with whale sharks responsibly
These are wild, protected animals. Choose operators who follow the official code of conduct: small groups, no touching or chasing, reef-safe sunscreen only, and a maximum number of boats per shark. Responsible tourism is what keeps the aggregation healthy year after year.
Tips to make the most of it
- Take seasickness tablets the night before and the morning of — the open crossing is real.
- Bring an underwater camera with a wrist strap, but watch the shark, not the screen.
- Book early in the season for calmer seas and fewer boats.
